DESCRIZIONE: Il Carrubo è un massiccio e longevo albero sempreverde dalla chioma espansa, perfetto per creare rinfrescanti zone d’ombra nei caldi giardini costieri. Produce baccelli coriacei scuri (le carrube) che racchiudono una polpa zuccherina, utilizzata fin dall’antichità come dolcificante naturale o sostituto del cacao. Una curiosità affascinante: i semi durissimi contenuti all’interno del baccello hanno una massa incredibilmente uniforme. Per questo motivo, nell’antichità venivano usati come unità di peso standard per oro e pietre preziose; da qui deriva la parola “carato”.

DESCRIPTION: The Carob tree is a massive and long-lived evergreen with a spreading canopy, perfect for creating refreshing shaded areas in hot coastal gardens. It produces dark, leathery pods (carobs) enclosing a sweet pulp, used since antiquity as a natural sweetener or cocoa substitute. A fascinating fact: the extremely hard seeds contained inside the pod have an incredibly uniform mass. For this reason, in ancient times they were used as a standard unit of weight for gold and precious stones; this is where the word “carat” comes from.
