La chioma frondosa crea grandi zone d’ombra nei parchi. Una curiosità affascinante: l’albero pratica una tecnica di “guerra chimica” chiamata allelopatia. Le sue radici secernono una sostanza nota come juglone, che risulta tossica per molte altre specie vegetali, impedendo loro di crescere nelle vicinanze e assicurando al noce tutto il nutrimento e lo spazio necessari.

DESCRIPTION: The Black Walnut is a towering deciduous tree, widely prized for both its highly valuable, durable dark timber and its strongly flavored, spicy nuts. Its leafy canopy casts immense shade in parks and landscapes. A fascinating fact: the tree engages in a kind of “chemical warfare” called allelopathy. Its roots secrete a substance known as juglone, which is toxic to many other plant species, preventing them from growing nearby and ensuring the walnut gets all the nutrients and space it needs.
